Fixing the Windows

When your windows are 120+ years old, they sometimes aren’t quite as efficient at blocking out the weather, especially with that BV wind gets to blowing. That’s a problem we’ve been facing for a long time, and with dozens of windows on the Courthouse, it’s going to be a long project to get them all restored. We are so excited to start that project this year, thanks to a grant from the Colorado State Historical Fund.

We started with the 6 worst windows: four downstairs along the front wall and two at the back of the courtroom. The two upstairs had a nasty habit of allowing snow to blow in through the cracks. Its always an adventure to discover snow inside on a cold winter morning.

Our contractor carefully removed the windows and took them back to his shop in Fort Collins. There, his team was able to meticulously rebuild each one, preserving the original glass wherever possible.

In the meantime, we got to sport these lovely insulated wood “windows”. Once the windows were ready, they were brought back to the museum and installed, using a mix of original hardware and carefully sourced replicas.

We also started the process of restoring our front door, but that’s become a story for another day.
